County Match Week culminated for Bucks in a thrilling match against Worcestershire & Herefordshire (W&H). Bucks started the last day tied with W&H on Match points – each having achieved 4 wins out of 4 matches. However, they led the field as they had 1 more Game point than us, so we couldn’t afford to halve the match, as we would have lost on countback.
We knew we had our work cut out, as Worcestershire & Herefordshire are a strong and experienced team. But they had played the same 7 players in all their matches - 5 rounds in 3 days, whereas we had been able to rest several of our key players on Tuesday afternoon, in preparation for the final push.
Starting on the 10th Tee, our team didn’t have a great start, and all matches were nip & tuck. Things looked bleak at the turn, as we were down in 4 out of 5 matches. The Bucks girls had to dig deep to rally round, with encouragement from Coach Tony Bowers and the ever-increasing crowd of spectators.
Foursomes pair Meg Cullen & Amelia Curtis went out first, and were 1 down after 3 holes, but got things back on track with a solid performance to give us our 1st win - 3&2.
Our 2nd pair of Eloise Feely & Demi Maxey went next, starting badly and dropping to 2 down, managing to pull things back. On the 8th (our 17th hole) Demi’s drive went right, but luckily rolled back down close to the hole, to give them the win 3&1. This meant that our almost untried foursomes pairings were undefeated over the 5 matches!
Ella Butteriss also started badly, and was 3 down by the turn after several wayward drives. She then rallied to show us her usual stunning form, winning 4 holes back-to-back, before clinching her match and gifting us the Championship with a thrilling birdie on the Par 3 8th hole in front of a large audience of spectators.
Daisy Kennedy was the 4th match out, with 3 out of 3 wins already under her belt. She was only player who was up at the turn, although her impressive lead of 3 was whittled down to 1, she finally finished off her opponent on the 9th hole with an impressive approach shot to the green, whereas her opponent went over the back, giving her the win 1 up.
Lulu Leetham started the day as our only player with 4 out of 4 wins. Bringing up the rear of our attack however, she uncharacteristically lost 2&1.
What a match! So Bucks are now Champions for the 11th Year running, thus qualifying us for the National Finals in Selby, Yorkshire on 19-21st September.
We have to say a massive thank you to all the staff and volunteers at Harewood Downs for putting on such a fabulous event! Susanna Mitterer ran the Tournament Office with distinction, with every tiny detail thought through. We are now very happy to hand over to Oxfordshire who are running the event next year at Tadmartin Heath – 7-10th June 2026.
